Paul's father passed away from unknown causes. His mother later abandoned the family and has not been heard from since. Paul was left with his siblings under the care of their elderly and impoverished grandparents. He did not have food to eat and he was very malnourished. The teachers at school were sometimes forced to look for a lunch for Paul since they could see he went without food for days. Paul's life was at risk and bringing him into the Children's Home was truly a matter of life and death.
